Action Film Top 100: Mr. Majestyk

The next film on the list that I’m watching is “Mr. Majestyk” starring the legendary Charles Bronson.
The description of the film is as follows:

“Cinema’s most rugged tough guy, Charles Bronson, threads his uncompromising coolness through a tight weave of car chases, shootouts and bare-knuckle brawling in this gritty, forceful action film (LA Herald-Examiner)! Bronson stars as Majestyk, an ex-con and Vietnam vet whose efforts to run a farm are thwarted by narrow-minded locals and corrupt cops. But when a Mafia hitman (Al Lettieri) destroys Majestyk’s crop, the farmer’s fuse is finally blown. With his rifle in hand and his girlfriend (Linda Cristal) at the wheel, he goes after the syndicate assassin. And from high-speed back-road chases to an explosive backwoods confrontation, mobster and maverick stalk each other: two of a kind, antagonists to the death.”

I haven’t been disappointed with a Bronson movie yet, even my wife sat through a few, one by herself.  Bronson had a series of films through “Cannon” that were really amazing (bad).  You can find montage’s of clips from these movies on you tube.  Here is  one of them and if this doesn’t make you want to watch them, you are in the wrong place.

No Retreat, No Surrender 2: OMG this is awful.

I made it through “No Retreat, No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder” and it was beyond awful.  It had NOTHING to do with the first movie.  Some parts were so bad that I couldn’t help but laugh.  This “sequel” has Scott Wylde, an American kickboxer, going to Cambodia to rescue his girlfriend from Russian and Vietnamese troops.  Scott Wylde is played by Loren Avedon, who might possibly be the worst actor ever.  He was built like Bob Saget with Scott Baio hair.  His only saving grace was that he was a pretty impressive martial artist and the fight scenes were well choreographed.  Unfortunately the creative fight sequences were ruined by the unbelievable facial expressions and terrible acting. The main villain was most hilarious.  For some reason he had super strength and when he fought people, he was able to toss them as if he were a Marvel character.  To cap it off, the final fight scene may have been one of the most ridiculous final fight scenes that I have ever watched.  I’m not kidding.  It involves the main villain pulling a jeep into a crocodile pit by a rope while Wylde panics to try and start the jeep so that he can pull away instead of jumping out of the jeep that’s moving backwards 1 MPH.  It was amazing. How amazing?  This amazing:

So AOBG had this movie at the 100 spot right next to “Marked for Death” and “Dirty Harry”.  This is absurd.  So far, the top 100 list is not going well.  Stay tuned, in a few days I will announce what the net film is to watch, maybe you can watch it too!

Continuing the Action 100

Months ago I had come across a blog that I love and frequent regularly, AOBG .  This is a blog devoted to action movies.  The content on this site is well worth the visit, everything from reviews to kill counts.  One thing they do have is a yearly action Top 100 movies which I have vowed to get through (only films I haven’t seen).  This is a great way to get new ideas, etc for shirts hence the Chow Yun Fat shirt that I decided to make after watching “Hard Boiled”.  This week I am going to watch “No Retreat, No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder.”
If you are unfamiliar with the “No Retreat, No Surrender” series, you are in for a treat.  I’m not sure of the premise of the sequel, but the first movie is amazing.  The movie features Van Damme as the villain, who really only has a limited role in the movie and doesn’t get too much screen time.  It’s one of his first films so he doesn’t really have many lines either.  The movie focus’s around Jason, the son of a Karate teacher who is forced to move his family because of threats from a Seattle crime syndicate who just so happens to have a top martial artist of their own on their roster, Ivan from Russia (Van Damme).  Jason and his family move into a new neighborhood, where Jason spends his time hanging out in an abandoned house training in the martial arts….by himself….with Bruce Lee’s ghost.  It’s amazing.
Although I have a hard time seeing how a sequel to this masterpiece could be any good, I will have to try an block out the first film to give this movie a chance.  If you have seen the second, feel free to leave some thoughts on it!

Bill Evans Trio Shirt

I got some good response to the Miles Davis and Thelonious Jazz tribute shirts that we put out a few months back.  I wanted to create a shirt for perhaps my favorite jazz pianist, Bill Evans.  I love the way that this turned out.  This is a great gift for any fan of jazz music.

Special thanks to Christina Jonas for recreating the text for me!

Expendables 2: As good as it gets.

Tuesday night I went to see Expendables 2, and I have to say…the movie was incredible.  If you go to the theater prepared to pick apart the plot, don’t even bother going.  This movie is not about the art of telling a story nor is it filled with much logic.  It’s not supposed to.  It’s sole purpose, is to kick ass.
I am not going to give any spoilers, but I did take a few mental notes that were further discussed after the film.

#1:  Arnold Schwarzenegger looks pretty terrible (old) and as ridiculous as it sounds, he has lost a step or two in the acting category.  The positive from this, is that due to his ridiculous appearance and his awful acting, it made his scenes that much more fun to watch.  He was hilarious.

#2:  Chuck Norris’s face is made of clay.  It is impossible to guess how old this guy is.  Without giving away too much, his scenes in the movie were also really hilarious and he gives Arnold a run for his money for who can deliver their lines the worst.

#3:  I’ll admit, when the announcement came that the movie was going to be PG-13, I was pissing and moaning about it every chance I had.  After watching this movie, I left there laughing at how unbelievably screwed up the rating system is.  This movie was violent, if not more violent than the first.  I’ts funny to me how you can show over a hundred people getting killed in numerous ways and its still PG-13, yet whip out a tit and say “fuck” and that’s “R”.  Its insane.

#4:  If I had to complain about one thing in this film (there’s nothing much to complain about), its that there was not enough of Van Damme.  For being the main villain in the film, he wasn’t in it nearly enough, but the scenes you saw him in, he lights it up.  He is truly one of the greats.

#5:  Jason Statham is on top of his game.  He was by far the most impressive in this movie.  His fight scenes where incredible and he out-shined the rest of this all star cast with some of the best fight sequences he has ever done.

Bottom line:  Go see Expendables 2.  It deserves to be seen.

New Shirt!

I had been waiting for a while to release this one.  I had actually started making the screen for it last week but learned that I shouldn’t make them a few beers deep.  I had messed up the screen and of course had no more supplies in stock for a new one so an order had to be placed.  Well this week I was able to have it finished!  I give you the “Commodore” shirt.

Bill Hicks Onesie!

We have yet to pay tribute to any of the great comics of stand-up. With so many legends to choose from, I thought we’d go straight to the outlaw himself, Bill Hicks. This onesie will be a hit with any fan of comedy having a baby. This is available this week on our blog exclusively and then added to our website next week.

Arnold Shirt #3

It’s Friday!  We have the final shirt for the 3 shirt Arnold t-shirt release this week.  This shirt came out pretty awesome.  Back when we first started doing shirts we had a Terminator shirt that I wasn’t all that nuts about.  I love action films, and if I am going to be paying tribute to some of these masterpieces, it needs to be perfect.  This new Arnold shirt is fantastic and will be a great gift for any fan of the series.  This shirt will be available on our website next week sometime but is available for readers of this blog to order right here first!

New Arnold Shirt #2

This is the second of the three new Arnold shirts and is basically just a variant of the first.  It is the “Raw Deal”  design inverted on a charcoal grey shirt.  Charcoal gray is a new shirt color that we are carrying and I am really liking the way it looks.  There will be more shirt designs coming out on this shirt color in the future.  This is available here on our blog first for a few days before it gets added to the website so get it here first!
