Its 2013 and I’ve just discovered Podcasts

A friend of mine kept telling me to check out Pod-casts, but I never really gave it any thought.  It always seemed like a pain in the ass.  I mean I’m pretty tech savvy, so it wasn’t that I didn’t know how to use pod-casts, it just didn’t seem worth my time, plus in my mind – if you couldnt be on satellite radio or regular radio, than you must just be terrible anyway.  Yeah…I was wrong.  I’m actually finding that its totally opposite. Besides the Stern show, everything on radio is really terrible, and the pod-cast world is just great.  There are so many Pod-cast shows that its hard to tell you what is worth listening to, mainly because you can literally listen to whatever you are interested in.
If you have a smart phone, I suggest getting Podkicker from your app store, its free. Once you get it, its pretty effortless to add Pod-casts:

The main page will show you what you’re subscribed to.

You can do a search for whatever you want and it will generate shows associated with your search and with a one click option to subscribe.
Your new subscription will appear on your main page after your refresh the screen.

Once you click into your show of choice, you have hours of entertainment at your fingertips!

Some of the pod-casts worth listening to:

The Nerdist:  This pod-cast did it for me.  I listened to one episode and I was hooked.  The show is hosted by the guy that hosts “Talking Dead”, Chris Hardwick, and there are almost 350 episodes archived to listen to.  The show gets a massive amount of guests from big-time music artists, wrestlers, and major actors.  The thing that drew me into this show was the fact that these famous people come on, and they are totally unfiltered.  I’m not sure if they just let it all hang out because they think that nobody is listening to these, or because its a super comfortable format to get interviewed on, but it makes for an entertaining show every time.  Great show, I highly recommend it.

The Steve Austin Show:  You don’t have to be into wrestling to enjoy this show.  Almost everyone knows who Steve Austin is whether its from reality TV, wrestling, or action movies.  The bottom line is, Steve Austin is exactly how he appears in real life as he is on TV.  So to hear him unplugged is really an experience better heard in person, than for me to just tell you on here.  This show is awesome and it will totally get a laugh out of you.

Hollywood Babble-On:   If you are a fan of Kevin Smith, you will love this show or any of the Kevin Smith broadcasts from SModcast.

Obviously there are hundreds of great shows to listen to, but I’ll start with these.  If you do a lot of listening on your ipod, phone, or PC throughout the day, check out some of these.

Movies for Guys that Like Movies…

Ah this feels good.  When I first started this blog I would focus a ton on action films as they were the primary theme of my shirts at the time.  I wanted to share some pretty sweet trailers for some movies that dudes like me should be getting ready to watch.  There are some real doozies coming out, here are a few:

“Escape Plan” looks amazing.  Not just because it has Stallone and Schwarzenegger together, but also because it looks like it makes no sense at all – and in some spots, looks completely absurd.  All of these ingredients are essentially part of the recipe which is that of, “Awesome”.  Judging from the trailer, Stallone is  a master of breaking out of prisons.  A group of people want him to test this new state of the art facility to see how full proof it is.  He seems to agree to do this in the trailer but then is electrocuted, blindfolded, injected with some unknown substance, and then taken to the super secret, state of the art facility.  This is where it really starts to look ridiculous (as they pan back to get a shot of the awful CGI prison).  Stallone then seems to receive the typical prison welcoming by getting into a scuffle where he then meets the newly jacked up Arnold.  It is then discovered that this was a big ploy to punish Stallone as he essentially falls of the grid.  Action prevails as Arnold and Sly bash there way through security guards that wear masks that look as if they are from mars, while people on the outside try to help as well, one being Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.  The goal?  To break out of this bizarre prison and to get revenge on who set him up. This shit looks totally awesome.

“Alien Uprising” or “U.F.O” is not something that will be in the theaters….ever.  But man, it looks stupid!  The trailer is kind of vague in terms of being able to explain the story in any depth, but basically, all is great for everyone, until the power goes out and of course, random alien mayhem.  If you are an action buff, and have never heard of this….just watch the trailer.  Don’t research it or it will ruin the surprise at the end!

Finally, the third awesome trailer for movies that I need to see soon, is for this gem.  “Legendary”, aka “Tomb of the Dragon”, stars Dolph Lundgren and Scott Adkins.   If you not familiar with Adkins, he’s a rising action star with his first real U.S. major role being Expendables 2, however he was in a bunch of other sweet movies.  He sort of looks like Ben Affleck if Affleck were an awful actor and could kick peoples asses.
Travis (Adkins) and his team (I’m guessing they are scientists) travel to China to capture some creature that is said to be tormenting some tiny village.  This creature is of course not something that is supposed to be real, so they have to travel to see it for themselves.  All hell breaks loose when Harker, the legendary bounty hunter, also wants to get his piece of the action!
I’m seeing a pattern here with these last two trailers…..totally awesome action stars and over the top terrible sci-fi effects.  I know for a fact I’ll be in the theatre for “Escape Plan”.  The other two I will try to see  soon so that I can give my full review on them.  If you have seen any of these, feel free to comment!

New Woody Guthrie Shirt

Finally a new design!  Its been tough getting the time to be able to pump out a new design.  I’ve been on a small kick designing shirts that pay tribute to obscure musicians.  This time around, I wanted to design a Woody Guthrie Shirt.  I love the way this shirt came out and it would be an awesome gift for a fan of the genre.  This is printed on a creme American Apparel cotton shirt and is fantastic quality.

Check it out here at supersweetshirts.com , our Etsy Store , or our eBay Store .

Our Imagination Nursery Project!

This weekend was super productive.  With no set plans, it gave us a ton of time to work in the nursery as we are closing in on the final project in this room….the new floor.  I’m a bit scared to try this next project by myself, but I was scared when I was trying the crown molding, and that turned out fine.  This will be my most challenging project yet.
This weekend, we started wrapping up some of the final things that needed to get done before starting the floor.  We had to finish the inside of the closet and we had to sand and paint the window molding.  As soon as we finished these, all of the dirty work was pretty much done.  This would clear the way for putting up the new light.  We had looked at a number of lights and up until maybe a week ago, we were set to pay a little more than $100 for the one we wanted.  Then Nicole came up with the idea to get one of those paper ball  shades.  I loved this idea, mainly because it would sort of resemble a moon!  We found one at Pier 1 Imports for about 10.00.  We then bought a mini pendant light kit from Home Depot for 14.99 making the entire light around 25.00.  Pretty sweet huh?  I put that up this weekend as well, and we are finally getting to see the formation of this room come together.  Besides our kitchen, this baby is going to have the best room in the house!

Stay tuned for more updates!  I’m trying to make a more constant flow of blog posts happen, I have been insanely busy but if I pour myself a tasty pint, I can chill out enough to type out an entry!

Back!

I haven’t been posting on here lately, I simply haven’t had any time!  My mother mocked me a few days ago (as she commonly does), laughing at how I am constantly stressed out and overwhelmed at what I take on at once.  Basically right now, the Super Sweet Shirt Company is busier than we have ever been.  At the same time my wife and I are completely gutting and remodeling a room in our house for the new baby.  So what can I add to all of that?  How about redesigning our website from scratch!  Not the brightest move, but after long nights and exhausting weeks, it is finished.  The entire catalog hasn’t been added yet, but it soon will be.  That part is taking longer than normal because I need to re-shoot pictures for all products.  The site itself though is awesome and I love the way that it turned out!  Here are some new features on the new supersweetshirts.com :

-Brand new “Contact Us” feature lets you easily ask me questions on-site without having to send emails or hassle.  I usually respond in minutes unless I am asleep.
-New Sale section that will eventually replace the clearance sections we had in our Etsy and eBay stores.  supersweetshirts.com will be the only place to get our clearance items.
-Blog is fed into the site.  Now you can check out the shirts, sales, and blog on one site.
-Super easy method for updating the site with the newest shirt updates.  No more long delays for shirts being added to the site.
So now all we are waiting for is to have ALL of the products on the site.  Soon!!!

2 Days Left!

Our Holiday sale is ending in 2 days so don’t miss out!  The response has been ridiculous, like the kind of rush we get going in to Christmas.  The sale will stop June 1st and will be the last chance for a while to score ridiculous deals from our Etsy and eBay stores.

New Doctor Who onesie!

I am super excited to bring you this new onesie as I am a huge fan of Doctor Who.  This onesie fits in well with out super nerdy onesie series.  In our shops we offer the “Little Captain” onesie featuring Captain Picard, our “Little #1” onesie featuring Will Riker, and now this sweet 2 colored Doctor Who tribute, “Little Time Lord”.

This gift will steal the show for any Dr. Who fan having a kid.  This is now available in our ebay and etsy stores and will be up on our main website soon.

The Nursery is coming along nice!

If you are new to this blog, my wife and I are having a kid, so we have been working on a nursery.  We took the room where my old office was, and completely gutted it out, down to bare bones.  The room was a disaster…crumbling plaster walls, layers of overlapping wallpaper, no insulation, a pull string light on the ceiling, wall sconces with twisty switches randomly on the wall, and a wood floor that was cracked and in rough shape.  This has been, by far, the biggest job I’ve done myself in this house.  My wife has helped a lot as well, but the hardcore stuff she couldn’t help with.  I went balls out.  It’s crazy when you know you have a kid on the way, like someone you are going to raise and care for.  A new life that you get to pass down things to.  It makes (or should make) you want to be the best you can be, and to give the best you can give in terms of effort in life.  You don’t want your kid thinking your a shlub.
I’m a nostalgic person, I never forgot what it was like to be a kid and to use your imagination.  Mine was always going.  I’d spend hours and hours with my toys, acting out entire wrestling story-lines that went on for years.  I remember all of them, its completely ridiculous looking back on it now, but at the time, I know I loved it.  My toys at the time, were all commercial, like He-man, Rambo, Thundercats etc…..but I never really cared about that, all of the toys in my mind had totally different names and personalities that I created.  That’s just how I was.  As stupid as it sounds, I think it was just creativity, something that once you get a taste of, it never leaves you.  Lets get back to this room…

Nicole and I are not going to know what the baby is and want to be as unisex as we can be.  We painted the room a pretty neutral combination of colors and we will be putting in an oak floor to further soften the room. I currently am in the process of doing the crown molding around the door.  This was one hell of an experience, but I finally learned how to do it!

A royal pain….but it came out great!

On the wall where the closet is, will be where the crib goes…I wanted to do something cool on the wall.  Like many kids, the timeless tale of “Where the Wild Things Are” was one of my favorites, a true tale of a wild imagination.  I decided to attempt my first wall mural.  I’m not a painter, in fact I hate it.  I never had the attention span to deal with paint, which was why I always worked pen/ink.  This was going to be painted and I knew it would be a challenge.  I borrowed my step fathers projector to help me get an accurate outline of the picture on the wall.  This sort of failed.  Mainly because I couldn’t move the projector back far enough to fill the wall, in fact it would only fill maybe a quarter of it…minus a few facial details, the projector was sort of a failure….I was going to have to draw out 90% of it myself which was sort of intimidating because I’ve never worked on something so large.

For the paints, I had the idea of just bringing a picture of the book cover to home depot and then having them mix me $2.95 8oz samples of every color I needed.  It was really super easy although I’m sure they were annoyed at the amount of samples I wanted.

I’m not the greatest painter, but i feel this is looking OK so far.  If it winds up looking terrible, we can just paint over it!

More updates to come, including new shirts, beer, and Doctor who!

New Torchwood Shirt!

I started watching Doctor Who a few months back, and I am not totally wrapped up in it.  Its way worse than Star Trek TNG was for me, this is by far my favorite series of all time.  One character I like in particular, is Captain Jack Harkness who has become the subject of my first Doctor Who related T-shirt!

Both of these pictures are of the American Apparel versions of the shirt.  The men’s is offered in Military Green while the Women’s version is offered in Creme.  This shirt will be a great unique gift for any fan of the Doctor Who series!  These shirts are currently available in our Etsy and eBay stores and will be on the website soon.

Our Trip to Stone Brewery

The last thing we did on our San Diego trip was the thing I wanted to do most….our trip to Stone!

When I think of craft beer, Stone Brewing is one of the first breweries I think of.  They are like the Bruce Lee of brewing.  They took a look a traditional craft brewing at the time, and tossed all rules and tradition out the window.  Setting themselves apart from the rest, they are true icons of the craft beer movement.  This was the nicest brewery I’ve ever been to.  It was sort of hard to find the place, not because it was complicated direction-wise, but the building looked like some cookie cutter office park and we had initially driven past it.   Parking was almost impossible as the lot was totally full.  Once we got in, it was like stepping foot into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  Ok maybe not that extreme….but I was pretty happy.  The eating area is amazing with a huge outdoor section in a lush Japanese garden that actually had trails which led to little social areas with fire pits, chairs, mini bars, it was awesome.  We sat down outside, each table having one of those heaters in case it was a bit chilly.  I wanted the beer on cask which was some sort of special IPA with ginger (if I remember correctly), but they were out of the cask.  I was upset..but not really, there were tons of beers to choose from.  The cool thing about stone is that they carry other craft beers from other brewers.  I was in the mood for a cask brew….

I was able to find several different IPA’s to enjoy and we also sampled some others.  You were able to get sample flights of basically whatever you wanted.

The food was average, not bad at all, just not “amazing”.  The portions though were truly American.
In the back, you can see where the trails go off into the Stone wooded wonderland.   It’s amazing to see something like this when you see that the brewery is just some business park.
I wish every table I sat at looked this way.

The visit to Stone was pretty awesome.  I was not leaving San Diego without stopping here!  The Merch Shop was pretty nice as well an reasonably priced.  I picked up a shirt and cap and Nicole picked up one of these:
