Don’t Forget Your Roots

It was the legendary hardcore band H20 that wrote “Don’t Forget Your Roots”, a song I hadn’t thought about in probably 15 years but popped into my head last night as I spent my Saturday night catching up with an old friend from my youth.  I used to rock out.  I did.  I had my days of drunken debaucheries and living room gigs.  They were a blast.

Here I am over a decade ago, topless and disgusting.

His band, “The Narcs” were coming to town, playing in the basement of a run down house, which probably had a clueless, out of town landlord that had no idea his property now looked like a shelter in “Mad Max”.   I have to be honest, when I was informed that the show was at this house (which was about 4 blocks down from my house), I was far from excited, in fact I was dreading it.  Don’t get me wrong, I was excited to catch up with one of my two best friends from back in the day, but at 34 years old I was not looking forward to getting THIS old-school.  I still listen to the same music I listened to growing up, only now, instead of living it up punk rock style, I’m planning where to plant my arborvitaes next year.  Instead of blowing weed in a group of dudes, I’m selecting shades of paint at home depot for the next room we’re painting.  To sum it up, I’m in a different place these days.  Last night though, I had a good time.  The best part?  It was kind of like being allowed to go back in time, re-live a moment you at one time enjoyed (minus blowing weed with a group of dudes), and then getting to return to my current life.   It’s a bizarre feeling that I’m not sure everyone can relate to, but I’m trying to explain it the best I can.
I was supposed to meet him down at that house at around 9pm but hadn’t heard from him until closer to 10.  At that time I was cuddled under a blanket with my dog watching a movie with Nicole.  When the text came in, the reality set in that I had to head down there.  I slapped on a hoodie and a winter hat and drove down.  I easily could have walked, but even though it was only a few blocks down, it was a few blocks down towards a sketchy area, so I preferred driving.  That way if I were to be attacked, I’d be in a car, and I could just run over them.
When I got to the house, I walked up to the front of it, only because I had seen a group of dudes on the porch, all dressed in their finest bad ass clothing, smoking cigarettes and sipping awful beer.

“How’s it going dudes?” I said, feeling completely ridiculous.

I’m guessing I sounded as ridiculous as I thought only because they smiled and directed me to the back of the house when I had asked where the “doorman” was for the cover charge.  I’m sure all of that was completely ridiculous sounding, but I didn’t care.  At this point I was feeling so insanely stupid, that I was amused at my own discomfort and starting to enjoy myself.  It sounds crazy, but that’s kind of how I am.
I went into the back yard, which was fenced in (accept for the areas where the fence was destroyed and tipped over).  There wasn’t a light back there but there were packs of dudes smoking in darkness, and the ground was kind of muddy and probably covered in dog shit, but who could tell with no light?  I made my way passed these dudes trying to look casual and avoiding any eye contact.  It’s a weird feeling when you just make your way into someone’s house like this.  Luckily as soon as I opened the door I had recognized another member of the band, a great kid who I had known from back home as well.  We were super excited to see each other after all these years.  All of the anxiety of being at this place was thrown out the window at that instant.  I was going to lighten up, and ride this time warp.
The bands played in the basement of this old house.  You went down a few concrete steps into this dingy basement, dark, loaded with people, and stinking of B.O.  I was able to see three bands play to a full blown mosh pit in the basement of this old house.  It’s funny how when I was young, none of what I just mentioned sounded weird to me, yet now it seems totally insane while I watch and cringe at kids applauding bands by pounding loudly on the heating ducts. What I had forgotten was how cool everyone was.  Not cool like Fozi,  but more as in “nice”.  No fighting, no trouble really, just people having a great time.

This basement was pretty packed and stinky.  I was difficult to take pictures because there would only be a light on when the bands were not playing.

This night was truly the closest to stepping into a time machine as I will probably ever come.  It was a fun thing to see again, and to be honest, if they come to town again, I’ll probably go (mainly to some old friends).   The best part was that once it ended, I got to return home to my regular life.  I’m not sure if this is a post anyone will find at all interesting, or if I just wrote it to archive this experience, but that was my Friday night.  Now its time to take down the Christmas lights.

A Great Beer from the Great Lakes!

My wife and I were married in Columbus, and immediately after we were pronounced “husband and wife”, we hightailed it to Cleveland and had lunch at the Great Lakes Brewery.  I was never a big fan of their beer, not that it was bad, but more of the fact that they didn’t brew beers that were my style.  The “Commodore IPA” was below average and nothing to really celebrate.  I congratulate them on their most recent brew, “The Alchemy Hour Double IPA”.  If this beer is available in your area and you love IPA’s, this beer deserves a try.  When my step-dad and I sat down to enjoy this beer, we both agreed that there was something about the hop flavor we enjoyed.    At first we thought they used Citra Hops, but we were wrong.  The familiar flavor though came from the Nugget Hops which makes sense because we are also fans of Troeg’s “Nugget Nector”, which is also awesome.  This beer has nice head, awesome color, and a great balance of malt and hop.  I highly recommend that you drink boat loads of it.

Back from Vacation!

Haven’t had a chance to blog since returning from our little vacation, as soon as we got home we got pounded with orders!  Things are back to normal now and the website has been updated with some of the latest products we have.  We have also started expanding the toddler section and there will be more added this week.

Nicole and I went to freakin’ Disneyland.  I haven’t been in over 20 years.  The bad part was Nicole had a brutal cold the whole time.  She was a trooper though and made the best of it.  We had time to hit up Magic Kingdom and Epcot.  Both were equally cool, however Epcot was more enjoyable because there were less kids.  The weather was really nice as well compare to here in Buffalo.  One thing I won’t miss about Florida?  Bad Beer.

New Bolo Shirt!

Earlier this week I decided to discontinue the original Bolo shirt we had.  I wasn’t feeling it anymore.  I felt that we needed to freshen it up!  I bring you the new Bolo shirt.

Warning:  Bad Ass

This is now posted in our eBay and Etsy store now, and should be on the website this week!  This shirt totally sweet.

Oh the work continues….

Couldn’t post last week, the shirt orders were steady and there was much to to.  I had taken Monday off to work in the old office room, continuing my demo work and making progress.  The room has now gone from one outlet, to three.  The pull string light on the ceiling is now gone and I installed a dimmer switch on the wall for it (which was a giant pain but I better get used to it, there are 2 others in the house that need to be gone), and the room is now insulated.

Here is a good look at the wall paper that was hidden behind the paneling.  This layer came off easy….but the layer under it might have been at east 60 years old.  That one I needed to spend an hour or two on steaming and scraping.  The plaster wall behind it was in good shape though which will save a ton of work and mess.

I get amazed when I see the bones of this house which was build in the 1800’s.  These things were built to last.

Hard to make out, but this is the floral, base layer of wallpaper that needed to get steamed.

This is a close up of the hippy second layer paper.

After a steam.

All insulated!

Next up is clearing out the room of anything that we don’t need in there, tearing down the rest of the door and wall molding, and starting the brick wall.  Stay tuned

Friday!

Oh man I’m glad its Friday, this week has been draining.  Over the next two weeks, we will be focusing on the Toddler section of our site.  I received a few orders for Toddler shirts this week and was immediately embarrassed that the Toddler webpage looked as terrible as it did.  Thanks to the people that looked at that and still wanted to order!  The pictures of the shirts on that section of our webpage were horrendous, you couldn’t tell what colors the shirts were not to mention, 90% of the colors/styles were discontinued.  Over the next two weeks that section is under complete overhaul and it will look fantastic when its finished.
Also for blog readers that like it when we post home improvement projects, we have started renovation in another room.  The room that used to be my office has begun demolition.  The room was way too big to be my office and I pretty much hated being in there.  I moved my office into a smaller room and began tearing the room apart.  I made the vow that there will be no messing around in there.  This house was loaded with archaic electrical situations, terrible dry walling, and the floors are awful as well.

The previous owners drywalled over the plaster to hide the wallpaper and damaged plaster. This is a common practice but do it right….don’t drywall around the woodwork or it looks like this……kill me.
Our bedroom and the old office have lights like this….no switch…just this rope hanging from the ceiling.  I have had enough of this as well….I’m going to rewire the ceiling to a switch.

………………. plus the plaster is cracked.  This will need to be addressed as well.  Oh and do you see that to the left…?

…yeah this. We are almost 100% positive that this gorgeous paneling is hiding something as well. Oh the anticipation!

More to come on this!

"The Following"

Television is pretty amazing these days.  We are finally in an age where most movies are mind numbing and stupid, while TV shows like Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones create episodic history with int-requite story lines and way more time allotted to getting them across.  With that being said, Kevin Bacon’s new show “The Following” was a laughable pile of crap.  Kevin Bacon is one of my favorites, and I had high hopes for this show, especially after hearing his reasons for returning to television in an interview with Howard Stern.  Bacon commented about how whenever he was out in a social setting and there were people talking about entertainment, they were never referring to movies.  People always spoke about how great television shows were, and he thought that the time was right.  He said that he signed up for 6 seasons but I’ll tell you what….this show blows.  The production is terrible, it is loaded (and I mean loaded) with cliche lines and references, and the pace of the show is so quick that its loaded with illogical scenarios and plot holes.  The actor that plays the genius, mad man, serial killer is deplorable.  The character is basically Hannibal Lector minus anything interesting.  It is horrendous.  Normally, I would enjoy watching something this bad.  Sometimes it can be relaxing to sit down, laugh and poke fun at how bad a show is….but this one I had hopes for…..dammit Bacon.

New Music

I rarely post music reviews, mainly because I normally hate anything new coming out.  I come from an era of amazing music so the bar is pretty high.  Over the last few months I’ve made a focused effort to research new bands, listen to new albums in their entirety, and discover numerous “similar artists” along the way.  Like many people, I am a subscriber to Spotify which makes it easy to “star” new music that I like so that I can revisit them.  As of late, there are two bands/albums that have been getting played almost every day for a few weeks now, so I figured I’d write about them.

The first album:

Heartsounds are freaking awesome.  I can’t stop listening to this cd.  It is pure 90’s Epitaph punk at it’s best and happen to be on the Epitaph label as well.  I find that many times they sound just like “No Use For a Name”.  Great melodic punk loaded with technical riffs speed.  This band is awesome and their video for “Unconditional” off their most recent album “Drifter”, is awesome/hilarious.

The second album:

The Menzingers are from Scranton, PA and are another Epitaph band.  I actually found both bands together at the same time.  This band is great as well, offering a softer sound with more of an indy touch.  They still have a great punk edge and often remind me of Alkaline Trio.  The most recent album, “On the Impossible Past” is 13 songs total, and maybe 2 songs from being a perfect album.  It’s pretty good.

New Tribute to Evil Dead!

We have a new shirt out this week and I totally love it.  Carrying on the new goal in 2013 of thinking outside the box when designing new shirts, this Evil Dead shirt came to me in a dream, literally.  I woke up, had the image and placement on the shirt embedded in my head, and I went to work that night.  The image is actually from Army of Darkness, but regardless, I love the result.

This shirt is available in our Etsy store and our eBay store.  I’d normally say that it will be available at our website within a couple of days, but I’m super behind updating the official web store (It’s getting there!)

Cheers!

New Design!

I have a few new designs coming out this week, starting off with this tribute to one of the masters: Mr. Miyagi.

I like the way the design turned out as I’ve wanted to add a Miyagi shirt for quite some time.  I wanted to originally do a shirt with the logo on the back of Daniel’s Karate gi, but decided to do this instead (although I’ll probably revisit the idea).
